An Indian Wedding

The gold jewellery tinkling, the sarees of silk on people conceited as well as banal, ladies lamenting upon wearing similar colours, aunties narrating sagas about their bravado and the price of onions, and uncles trying to guess their relatives while trying to figure out if that kid looks more like his mom or dad. This is the atmosphere of a typical Indian wedding, indomitable in every aspect.

You get to see so many different kinds of people, and the decor always leaves you speechless. All the elaborate rituals and the hurricane of emotions across the myriad faces is what this day is about. There always have to be hundreds of people making this day truly special. The vignettes of colours popping up in every corner making the room light up like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The carpets making each and everyone feel exalted, and the huge mandap in the middle, like a citadel looking over the village. It all came together beautifully like the threads of the clothing of happiness and content.

One could hear the sizzle of appetisers, ready to be served. Relatives catching up after a few days, but acting like they met after an epoch of waiting. The generators were audible, and the waiters served dishes to censorious and taciturn people alike. You could see the innumerable kinds of people present in the same room. Some would turn out to be garrulous and make you regret ever being in that conversation. The vociferous atmosphere is sufficient to give you a pounding headache, but there will always be some laconic people who show acumen.

Some Items would taste like they were worth the wait, but some could be as bitter as the aunty sitting beside you, pouring her heart out even though you were never listening. Your taste buds may battle each other but the end result is not always pleasant. A few dishes would taste amazing and leave you in awe. At the end, just the smell would be sufficient to fill your stomach with curiosity for where it came from. You could smell the sweat of the hardworking relatives who have been working all day. The oil flares the nostrils and kills the appetite. The aroma was rather confusing but the Bollywood music covered all the flaws. The dance floor was lively but it was more in their hearts.

The atmosphere fills your heart with joy and makes you wonder how the couples life would change forever. It’s wonderful to see everyone’s faces lit up with hope for the future and gratitude for the present. The canvas of life may seem blank but it’s emptiness is what gives way to the innumerable possibilities for the future.
